Plasterboard Types Explained: Which Board Do You Need?
Standard, moisture, fire, acoustic, insulated, tapered edge or square edge — here is the practical trade-counter guide before you order.
Plasterboard looks simple until you need the right one. The board type, edge type, thickness and finish all matter. Get it wrong and the job can mean more filling, more sanding, weaker fixings or a finish that does not look right.
The Main Types Of Plasterboard
Different plasterboards are made for different jobs. Some are for general walls and ceilings, some are better for humid areas, some help with fire performance, sound reduction or insulation.
Standard Board
General-use plasterboard for many internal walls and ceilings where no special moisture, fire or acoustic performance is needed.
Moisture Board
Used in humid areas such as bathrooms and utility rooms. It is moisture-resistant, not waterproof.
Fire Board
Used where a wall or ceiling needs a fire-rated system. The full build-up matters, not just the board.
Acoustic Board
Helps improve sound performance when used as part of the correct wall or ceiling construction.
Insulated Board
Plasterboard bonded to insulation, often used where thermal improvement is needed on walls or reveals.
Specialist Boards
Some jobs need specific manufacturer systems. Always check the spec where performance matters.

Tapered Edge Vs Square Edge
Edge type is one of the easiest things to miss when ordering plasterboard, but it affects how the wall is finished.
Tapered Edge
The long edges are slightly thinner. This gives room for joint tape and filler, making it better for tape and joint finishes.
Square Edge
The edges stay full thickness. This is commonly used where the board is being fully skimmed with plaster.
Tape And Joint Vs Full Skim
Tape and joint is a drylining finish where the joints are taped, filled and sanded instead of skimming the whole wall. It can be quicker, with less drying time, and works well on clean, flat boardwork.
A full skim covers the whole board face with plaster. It takes longer to dry, but gives a more traditional, uniform finish and can be more forgiving on older or uneven walls.
Do not forget the finishing materials
Scrim tape, joint filler, plaster, beads, adhesive, screws and sanding materials.
Board Thickness Explained
Thickness depends on the job, the background, the fixing method and the performance needed. Common plasterboard thicknesses include 9.5mm, 12.5mm and 15mm.
9.5mm
Often used for lighter work. Check suitability carefully, especially on ceilings and where fixing strength matters.
12.5mm
A common choice for many walls and ceilings, depending on the job and fixing centres.
15mm
Often used where extra performance, strength, fire or acoustic requirements are part of the specification.
Moisture Board Is Not Waterproof
Moisture-resistant plasterboard is useful in humid areas, but it is not a waterproofing system on its own.
Shower areas, wet rooms and tiled zones may need proper tanking, tile backer boards or a manufacturer-approved system. Do not assume green board alone is enough for direct wet areas.
Which Side Faces Out?
Plasterboard normally has a face side designed to be finished and a back side that goes against the wall or framing. The face side is usually the side intended for plaster, jointing or decoration.
Check the board markings and manufacturer guidance. It sounds basic, but putting boards the wrong way round can make finishing harder than it needs to be.
Fixings Matter More Than People Think
Plasterboard is only part of the job. Screws, adhesive, fixings, plugs, beads and jointing materials all affect the finish.
For heavy shelves, radiators, TVs or cabinets, plasterboard fixings alone may not be enough. Plan supports, studs, noggins or suitable anchors before the board goes on.
Where Building Regulations Can Matter
For simple internal patching, this is usually just a product choice. For fire-rated walls, separating walls, flats, conversions, extensions or insulation upgrades, the board may be part of a regulated system.
Fire performance, sound resistance and thermal performance are covered by different parts of the Building Regulations. The important bit: the board alone does not prove the wall or ceiling complies. The full construction matters.
Cutting, Handling And Storage
Plasterboard should be stored flat, kept dry and handled carefully. Damaged corners, wet boards and badly bowed sheets can make a simple job harder.
Most boards can be scored and snapped, but large sheets are awkward. Plan access before delivery, especially if boards need to go upstairs or through tight hallways.
Common Mistakes Before Ordering
The usual problems are not complicated: wrong edge, wrong thickness, forgetting jointing materials, under-ordering boards or choosing moisture board for a fully wet area.
